The alarm bell of the Moat House rang at an unusual time. (p.3)
2. When this unusual thing happens, how do the townspeople react? Where do they meet?
When the bell rings, all the people go to the Moat House and wonder why it rang. They want to know what has happened. (p.3)

3. What had happened half an hour before this bell rang?

A messenger had ridden through the town carrying a message from Sir Daniel to his second in command, Sir Oliver Oates. (3, 4)

4. Who is Sir Daniel Brackley?
He is a knight who is the lord over the people of Tunstall. He is the god-father/adopted father of Richard/Dick Shelton. (4)

5. Who is Sir Oliver Oates? What is his job?
He is the second in command under Sir Daniel. He is the right hand man and it is his job to take care of things while Sir Daniel is gone. He is a parson, and is a man of letters as well, so he takes care of all legal matters. (4)

6. Who is Master Richard Shelton? Describe him.
He is the ward of Sir Daniel. His father was Harry Shelton. He is young, naive and kind. He is intelligent and the people trust him to lead. He is loyal to Sir Daniel even when people say that Sir Daniel should not be trusted. (4)

7. What news had the express (messenger) brought to the town?
The messenger reported that there was a battle coming/about to happen/impending and that men were needed. (4)

8. What command was given to the people in this message?
The messenger said that Sir Daniel wanted all able-bodied men to report to the Moat house and gather so they could fight in a battle at Kettley. Also, if they do not report at Kettley, Sir Daniel will punish them. (4)

9. Who must lead the group of men to the battle?
Bennet Hatch must lead the group of men to the battle. (4)

10. What is the cost of the war for the common people, according to the woman in the crowd?
The cost of the war is very high for the common people. When war occurs, the men are called away from their land and their jobs, so food is not produced and the land becomes unproductive. In addition to that, women lose their husbands and children lose their fathers to the war—and so they must wait and starve as the Lords get richer and the poor get poorer. (4)

11. Describe Dick’s responses and replies to the concerns that the common people speak of. What does this reveal about his character?
Dick says that the men who fight will be paid, and then he says that it will be an honor for the men to die protecting their lord. He thinks that Sir Daniel is a good master and guardian. His answers reveal that he is a naïve person who has not really looked at life from the perspective of others who have a lower social position. (4, 5)

12. What kind of man do the common people reveal Sir Daniel Brackley to be? What has Sir Daniel done many times since the war first started? What does this show about his character?
The common people point out to Dick that Sir Daniel has switched sides several times as the War of the Roses goes on. He switches to whatever side benefits him the most financially, so it shows that he is a greedy man who has no sense of integrity or honor. (5)

13. Describe Bennet Hatch. What does he look like? What does he do for Daniel Brackley?
He is dressed like a soldier. His skin is dark, which means he is accustomed to being outside a lot. He looks tough and strong and he is the right hand man for Sir Daniel and it is his job to lead the men to battle. He is the bailiff. (5)
14. After Hatch dismisses the people, who does he go to visit with Dick? Describe this man. What was his job in the past?
They go to visit Nick Appleyard. This man is very old and he used to be an archer in the war between France and England. He loves to talk about his life as an archer and how the soldiers of the current time really don’t know how to be soldiers. He does not seem to be surprised when Dick and Bennett come. (6,7)
15. What does Sir Oliver command Nick Appleyard to do?
Sir Oliver commands Nick Appleyard to go to the Moat House and command the men who are in charge of protecting the town while all the other soldiers have gone to fight in the battle at Kettley. (7)

16. How many men will Nick Appleyard have to guard the Moat House with? Who else will be there?
He will have only six men to help him guard the Moat House. Sir Oliver will also be there to help out, but his presence is pretty useless, since he’s a parson and not a soldier. (7)

17. What does Nick Appleyard notice about the birds in the forest? What does he say they do in a battle?
He notices that the birds are flying around chaotically above the trees. He says that the birds are the first warning that the enemy is coming since they get disturbed by the men who quickly sneak through the forest hoping to attack by surprise. The birds act as sentries-- guards. (8)

18. Who does Nick Appleyard think might be near them? How does Sir Bennet Hatch respond to this worry?
He thinks that enemy archers might be near them in the forest. Sir Bennet thinks that he is silly for thinking that there could be someone out in the forest. He says that the nearest men are the men that are fighting in the battle. (8)

19. Why does Nick Appleyard believe their lives are in danger?
He believes their lives are in danger because they serve under Sir Daniel and so many men hate Sir Daniel because of the things he has done during the war. (8)
20. Who does Nick Appleyard believe is more likely to be shot—himself or Sir Bennet Hatch? Why does he think so? Does Sir Bennet agree with this?
Nick Appleyard believes that Sir Bennet will be shot because he burnt down Grimstone, and the people will never forgive him for it. Bennet does not agree with this. (8,9)
21. What happens suddenly as Bennet and Nick Appleyard are having a conversation about the dangers of being shot?
While they are having this conversation, an arrow suddenly flies out from the forest and strikes Nick Appleyard in the back between his shoulder-blades, piercing him completely through. Nick Appleyard falls forward onto the ground in his garden. (9)

22. When Nick Appleyard is shot, what does Bennet Hatch think will happen to himself soon and why does he think it will happen?
Bennet thinks he will be shot soon, and he thinks it will happen because Sir Daniel is too harsh and demanding with the people, and because he serves Sir Daniel, he thinks he is also a target of the people’s hate. (10)
23. Describe the arrow that was used to shoot Nick Appleyard. What is written on it?
The arrow was all black with feathers. It had “Appleyard, from John Amend-All” written on it. (10)
24. Where do Dick and Bennet Hatch carry the dead body of Nick Appleyard?
They carry the dead body of Nick Appleyard back into his house. (11)
25. When they carry Nick’s body into his house, what does Sir Bennet Hatch want to look for? How does Dick respond to this?
Bennet wants to look for Nick Appleyard’s hidden fortune. Dick tells him that it is disrespectful to rob a man of his fortune before his dead body. He says that Nick Appleyard’s body would come alive again because it would be disgraced. (11)
26. Who comes to Appleyard’s house as Dick and Bennet Hatch are caring for the body? Describe him.
Sir Oliver Oates comes to Nick Appleyard’s house. He is tall, fat, and has a red complexion. He is around 50 years old, and he is wearing the clothing of a parson. He is wearing a black robe. (11)

27. When he hears that Nick Appleyard is dead, how does Sir Oliver respond?
He first says “This is a judgment”, which is a sign that he is aware that he and the other two men did something that deserved punishment. He has a guilty conscience about something. He also cries and has a pale face. He says a prayer for the dead man. (12)
28. When Bennet Hatch and Oliver Oates start discussing the potential murderers, what does Sir Oliver say about the nature of rebellion? Where does it come from?
Oliver says that the murderer could not have come from the lower class, he says that it must have come from the top. He says that rebellion is always caused by powerful rich men who want more power and who are willing to pay poor men to do the dirty work for them. (12)
29. Does Bennet Hatch agree with Oliver Oates’s theory about rebellion? What does he say the common people are capable of doing at this time? Why are they capable of this?
No, he does not. He says that the common people are capable of rebellion because Sir Daniel has abused his power so much and mistreated the people to the point that they hate him and they will rebel. (13)

30. Why does Bennet Hatch believe that Sir Oliver will be murdered?
Bennet believes that Sir Oliver will be murdered because Sir Oliver has acted as the clerk for Sir Daniel, so it was with Sir Oliver’s help that Sir Daniel was able to take away the land of so many common people. According to Bennet, Sir Oliver has also played a part in the unjust punishment of many men. (13)
31. After Bennet Hatch, Dick Shelton, and Oliver Oates leave Appleyard’s house, where do they go? What must they now consider about the guarding of the Moat House?
They go to the churchyard where all the soldiers are supposed to meet. They now must consider who is fit to lead the men guarding the Moat House now that Nick Appleyard is dead.(15)
32. Describe the men that have gathered at the churchyard. How are they armed? Why aren’t there better soldiers available?
The men who gather are from the lower classes—they are most likely farmers and other country workers. They are not professional soldiers, and because of this, they are not suitably armed. Better soldiers are not available because they have already been called to war by Sir Daniel—he has exhausted his supply of men. (14)
33. When they are at the churchyard, who does Bennet Hatch see? Describe what happens after the fugitive is seen. What happens to him?
Bennet Hatch sees a fugitive running near the forest. After the fugitive is seen, the men try to follow him, but he is too fast. Dick tries to shoot at him, but his arrow misses the fugitive and the fugitive quickly disappears into the forest. (14, 15)
34. What is found pinned to the church’s door? What does this note say?
A letter is found pinned to the church door. It says that there are four black arrows set aside for the four leaders of Tunstall- - Sir Daniel, Nick Appleyard, Oliver Oates, and Bennet Hatch. It says that these four men will be killed by these four arrows. (16)

35. Who is in danger according to the note pinned on the door, and why are these men in danger?
The four men in danger are Sir Daniel, Nick Appleyard, Oliver Oates, and Bennet Hatch. Bennet Hatch is in danger because he burnt down Grimstone, Oliver Oates is in danger because he murdered Sir Harry Shelton, and it doesn’t say specifically why Sir Daniel or Nick Appleyard are in danger apart from the fact that these men oppressed John Amend-All and his men. It is clear that Sir Daniel is in danger because he is a tyrant and he has abused his power for too long. (16)
36. When Sir Oliver hears the note, how does he respond?
When Oliver hears the note, he acts defensively and swears that he is innocent. He says that he did not kill Sir Harry Shelton, but he also talks about the details of Sir Harry’s death—he says that Sir Harry’s throat was not cut. This is a suspicious thing to say and reveals that he may have been present when Sir Harry died. (16)
37. What does Sir Bennet Hatch do to make Dick a little suspicious?
Sir Bennet tells Sir Oliver to stop talking and then a little later, leans over and whispers something into his ear. This makes Dick suspicious. (17)
38. Who is Sir Harry Shelton?
Sir Harry Shelton is Dick’s real father. He is dead. (17)
39. Who must now lead the men at the Moat House?
Dick now must lead the men at the Moat House. (17)
40. Describe Dick’s relationships with Sir Oliver Oates and Bennet Hatch.
Dick is a student of Sir Oliver and Bennet Hatch. Oliver taught him how to read and write, and Bennet taught him how to lead and fight with weapons. (17)
41. What is the advice that Bennet Hatch gives to Dick before he goes to battle?
Bennet warns him to always have a soldier in front of him in battle, so that that soldier can draw shots away from Dick. He warns him that there is no help in Tunstall, and he tells him to carefully watch Sir Daniel because Sir Daniel is not trustworthy. He also warns him not to trust Sir Oliver because Sir Oliver has no will of his own, and only follows the commands of his authorities. He tells him that he should make good friends. Lastly, Bennet asks him to pray for his soul if he dies. (17, 18)

42. What does Bennet want Dick to do in case he dies?
Bennet wants Dick to pray for his soul if he dies. (17,18)
