The Dinner Party Comprehension Question Answers

9B- Here are the comprehension question answers for The Dinner Party. I am so sorry that this is up so late!

1. How did the American realize there was a cobra in the room?

While watching the hostess, he noticed her strange expression and saw her whisper something to a servant boy. The boy brought out a bowl of milk and put it outside the room in the verandah. The American knew that milk is used as bait for a cobra.

2. Who was the most courageous person at the party? Explain your answer.

Both the American and Mrs. Wynnes are equally courageous. Mrs. Wynnes, the hostess, was courageous because she acted calmly and did not scream when she knew that a cobra was lying across her foot. The American was brave because he fought not only the urge to be scared of the fact that the snake was under the table, but he also fought the temptation to be proud and to take all the credit for getting rid of the snake.

3. What makes the ending of the story effective? What do you think the guests concluded about the control a woman is capable of showing?

The end is effective because of Mrs. Wynnes’s calm explanation about the cobra. The guests probably concluded that women can show just as much control as men can.
