1. What details from The Ballad of the Harp Weaver arouse sympathy within the reader?

The dialogue between the mother and son arouses sympathy especially when the mother says she has no clothes to cover her son- -“not even a rag” (line 4), cloth, thread, or scissors to make clothes (line 7,8).
Sympathy is also aroused when we learn that they have very little food in the house (line 9)
Also, sympathy is aroused in the stanzas that talk about the change of the seasons and the increasing cold of the winter—this emphasizes that the situation of the mother and son is getting worse and worse (lines 14,15… lines 27,28, lines 53-59)
Lastly, sympathy is aroused when the son’s physical appearance is described—he has “little skinny shoulder-blades” sticking through his clothes. (lines 18,19)

2. How did the mother show her love for her son?
Before her ultimate act of sacrifice, the mother shows her love for her son by having him sit on her lap and warming him by rubbing his cold arms and legs, even though he’s really too big to be held like that. (ll.34-46)
Even though this act is very loving, her greatest act of love was the sacrifice she made for her son. She sacrificed her life to make clothes for her son. She played the magical harp and the harp made clothes all through the night, but it killed her in the end because she froze to death (lines 85-125)
