Answer Key to The Story of King Arthur and His Knights, p. 1-47

In the comments section of this post, I have posted all 42 questions and answers. You must have these copied into your notebooks by Tuesday and Wednesday. Thank you all for getting your answers to me on time!

1.Who is Uther Pendragon? What position did he hold in England?
-Uther Pendragon is a noble king who is the overlord of all of Britain. p.3

2. Who is Merlin? What vision did Merlin have about Uther Pendragon’s future?
-Merlin was a magician who could prophesize. He was Merlin’s advisor. He was also called Merlin the Wise. Merlin had a vision that Uther Pendragon would die soon with fever, which eventually came true. pp.3~4

3. Why was Uther Pendragon’s son taken away from him?
-If Uther Pendragon dies, the other kings would try to kill his son who would have the inheritance. Since the son was only a baby and can’t defeat them, it was best for him to be taken away to safety. pp.4~5

4. What happens to the realm of England after Uther Pendragon dies? How many years is it like this?
-After Uther Pendragon’s death, the realm fell into disorder and chaos. Kings fought over Uther Pendragon’s position as overlord, knights and barons stood on roads telling travelers to pay tolls for trespassing. Many of the poor travelers were held in bondage or even killed by these bad knights and barons. This continued for 18 years. p.5

5. Who goes to Merlin to seek advice about the problems England is facing? What does Merlin say to him to give him hope?
-The Archbishop of Canterbury calls Merlin to ask about what would happen in England’s future and he also wants to know if there is anything that can be done. Merlin replies that a wiser and more powerful man than Uther would lead England and that man would have Uther’s blood flowing in him. p.5~6


6. What test does Merlin set up so that a rightful and new king can be chosen finally?
-Merlin sets up a sword on the anvil, and that anvil is put on a large block of marble. Only the man who has Uther’s blood would be able to take the sword out, and he would be crowned king. On the sword there is an inscription that says “Whoever pulls this sword from the anvil rightly deserves to be the king of England.” p.6~7

7. How do Merlin and the Archbishop make sure that many people come to take part in the contest?
-Merlin tells Archbishop to command that every man should make an attempt to draw out the sword, so the Archbishop sets up a great tournament that will occur at Christmastime. They tell the people that ho ever pulls out the sword will be the overlord of the Britain.

Chapter 1

8. Describe Sir Ector. What kind of man is he?
-Sir Ector is a faithful and noble knight. He owns lots of property. At the request of Merlin and Sir Ulfius, he raises Arthur as if he was his very own son. He also kept the secret that Arthur was adopted. He is a very trustworthy man, and also very noble and faithful. p.11~12

9. Who are the two sons of Sir Ector? Describe them.
-Sir Ector’s sons were Sir Kay and Arthur. Sir Kay is a knight full of pride and trust because of the good deeds that he has performed in the Courts of Chivalry. He is respected for his ability in battle and he is eager to fight to gain more honor and respect. Arthur is an eighteen year old boy who is Sir Kay’s squire, which means that he is Kay’s servant. p.12

10. Where does Sir Ector take his sons and servants?
-Sir Ector takes his household to the great tournament that the Archbishop set up. p.12

11. What famous relatives of Uther Pendragon are at the tournament? Why are they there?
- King Lot of Orkney and King Uriens of Gore were there. Both of these men were related to Uther through marriage—Lot and Uriens were both married to step-daughters of Uther Pendragon. They are at the tournament because they are the two that are next in line for the throne.

12. Describe some of the events that occur in the list that Sir Kay participates in. What kind of warrior is Sir Kay?

→ Sir Kay participates in two tournaments in which they need to ride a horse to fight and a sword fight. The list, or fake battle, has a huge number of knights participating in it, and it is so intense that some of the women watching the battle actually faint from being too excited. Kay is an excellent knight and is a better warrior than most of those he fights against. He is greatly respected for his ability in battle and he is proud of this ability and praise. (pp.16~18)

13. Describe what happens in the sword contest between Sir Kay and Sir Balamorgineas. What happens to Sir Kay’s sword?

→ When Sir Kay gets to fight with Sir Balamorgineas, he was tired of the battles before. However he was eager to fight, so he gave it another shot. As they are fighting, both men get really angry at one another, and at one point in the battle, Sir Kay takes his sword and slams it against Sir Balamorgineas’s helmet. The blow is so hard that it stuns Sir Balamorgineas and breaks Sir Kay’s sword! (pp. 19~20)

14. Who must get a new sword for Sir Kay? How does he get it? Why is this sword special?

→ Arthur must get a new sword for Sir Kay. Arthur drew the sword from the anvil. This sword is special because Merlin had put a spell on it, so that only the person who has blood of King could pull it out. It is special because whoever pulls it out deserves to be king, so by pulling it out, Arthur has shown that he deserves to be king. (pp. 20~21)

15. When Sir Kay sees the new sword, how does he respond? What does he decide to do with the sword?

→ He immediately recognizes the sword and strangely asked his brother Arthur how he had found the sword. He is clearly excited when he sees the sword but tells Arthur not to tell anybody about how he got the sword. Then Sir Kay decides to keep the sword for his own and pretends that he is the one who pulled it out. (p.23)

16. Does Arthur understand the significance of his actions and the sword? How does Howard Pyle describe this on page 23?

→ Arthur does not understand the significance of his actions and the sword. Howard Pyle says that Arthur is like other great people who are so humble that they fail to realize the significance and greatness of their own actions. (pp. 22~23)

Chapter 2

17. When Arthur runs to get Sir Ector, where does he take him?

→ Arthur takes him to the tent where Kay is with the sword. (p. 25)

18. What does Kay say to Sir Ector about the sword?

→ He said that he took the sword out of the anvil by himself. (p. 28)

19. How does Sir Ector want Kay to prove that he was the one who pulled out the sword?

→He told Sir Kay to put the sword back into the anvil and then pull it out again, since if he pulled it out, he should easily be able to put it back again. (pp. 26~27)

20. Why does Sir Kay think that he can put the sword back into the anvil even though he was not the one to pull it out?

→ Because his young brother, Arthur, could do it, he thought that he would be able to put the sword back into the anvil. (pp. 27~28)


21. When Kay tries to put the sword back into the anvil, what happens?

- When Kay tries to put the sword back into the anvil, it was impossible to put it back even though put all of his strength into the effort. He tells his father that it’s not possible for any man to put it back in. (pp.27-28)


22. How does Sir Ector reply when Kay says it is impossible?

-He asks how he pulled out the sword if he can’t even put it back. (p.28)


23. What does Arthur do when Kay cannot put the sword back into the anvil?

-Arthur asks if he can try to put the sword back into the anvil and tells Sir Ector that he thinks he can do it because he was the one to pull it out. He thinks it shouldn’t be too hard for him to do. He then takes the sword, puts it back into the anvil, and then pulls it back out again. (p.28)

24. When Sir Ector sees Arthur put the sword back in the anvil, how does he react? Why does he react this way?
-As Arthur put the sword back in the anvil, Sir Ector grows in great excitement and bows down to Arthur. He reacts this way because he realizes that Arthur is the one who has the blood from Uther-Pendragon and realizes that Arthur will be the next overlord of England. (p.29)


25. What is the real story of Authur’s birth that Sir Ector tells him?

-Sir Ector tells Arthur that he is not his real father. He tells him that eighteen years ago, Merlin came to the place where Sir Ector lived. He showed the signet ring of the King and commanded him to take care of the baby and never tell anyone that the baby wasn’t his own. Sir Ector obeyed the command and he raised Arthur as his own. (p.29-30)


26. Did Sir Ector know for sure who Arthur was when he was put under his care?

-No, he didn’t exactly know who Arthur was for sure when he was put under his care. Even though he wasn’t sure, he had a strong suspicion that Arthur was Uther’s son. (p.30)

27. How does Arthur react when he discovers he is the son of King Uther-Pendragon? Why?
-After Arthur hears the story from Sir Ector about his birth, he becomes very sad. He is sad because he feels like he has lost a father now that he knows that Sir Ector isn’t his real father—he would rather still have a father than be a king. (p.31)

28. Why do Merlin and Sir Ulfius come to visit Sir Ector, Authur, and Sir Kay at the same time?

- They come to be witnesses and to verify the truth that Sir Ector has just spoken. (p. 31)


29. What does Merlin prophesy about Arthur?

-He says that Arthur will be the greatest and most famous king that ever lived in all of Britain. (p.31)

30. What are the blessings that Arthur gives Sir Kay and Sir Ector?
-Arthur blesses Sir Ector to be his father until to the end, and Sir Kay to be his Seneschal, which means that Sir Kay will be in charge of Arthur’s household and all of his servants. It will be his job to be the steward of Arthur’s kingdom. (p.32)


31. How does Sir Kay react when he learns the Arthur is king?

-He is completely shocked and feels thunderstruck. He feels both really happy and really sad at the same time—most of all, he is surprised because he can’t believe that his brother is the king of all England. (p.32)




Chapter 3

32. How many kings and knights try to pull the sword from the stone? Are any of them successful?

→ (p.37) Many Kings and knights tried to take the sword out, including nineteen kings and sixteen dukes, but all failed.


33. How does King Lot react when he can’t pull the sword from the anvil?

→ (p.36) When he couldn't pull the sword out, he is filled with anger and indignation


34. After all the kings and dukes fail, what do they say to the Archbishop?

→ (p.37-38) The kings and knights said, “All kings and dukes failed. We think Enchanter Merlin made it to fool us and bring us dishonor, and we think that no man is capable of pulling the sword out. Choose one person from here, and then we will obey and follow him as King.”


35. What solution does the Archbishop give after the kings complain? Why does he make this promise?

→ (p.38) The Archbishop told the kings that he would count to 1,000 seconds and if no one comes forth and draws the sword out, he would choose the king himself.


36. After Merlin says that Arthur is the son of King Uther Pendragon, how does Arthur prove that it is true?

→ (p.41) Arthur pulled the sword out of the anvil and thrust it back in and out several times.

37. How does the crowd respond when they see Arthur pull out the sword?
→ (p.41) The crowd is thrilled and they all shout very loudly. Their shouts are so loud that it shakes the earth around them.

38. How do most of the kings react?

→ (p.41) Most of the kings reacted in great astonishment and amazement that a little boy with no beard accomplished the impossible. Some of the kings believe that Arthur deserves to be the overlord, but other kings don’t think that Arthur deserves to be the overlord. (p.41)

39. Who is not happy that Arthur is king? Why are they upset?
→ (p.42) King Lot and King Uriens were the most upset. The two kings were rightfully in line for the throne by marriage and when a beardless boy took their chance they were furious. They don’t want to be ruled by a boy and they also believe that maybe someone has set Arthur up to be king so that they can secretly rule England through Arthur.

40. At the end of the chapter, how has Arthur’s opinion of being King changed?

→ (p.43) At the end of the chapter, Arthur was very happy that he had been chosen king unlike at the beginning of the chapter where he was upset about being King.

41. What is the lesson that the author leaves his readers with at the end of the chapter?
→ (p.43 ) The author’s lesson was anyone can also be successful if they take their sword of success from out of the iron of difficult circumstances.


42. What is the blessing the author wishes upon the reader?
→ (p.43 ) The blessing that the author wishes upon the readers is that God may grant his grace unto all the readers and that God will make all the readers successful in a way that satisfies them completely, bringing them both glory and happiness, just as He blessed Arthur.

Peter found a typo in question number 2-- Merlin is Uther Pendragon's advisor, not Merlin's advisor. :)
