Summary of Appointment with Love
While at war, Lieutenant Blandford faithfully corresponds for thirteen months with a woman named Hollis Meynell, whose name he had seen in a book. She encourages him and talks him through his fears, and he comes to love her. But when he asks her to send a picture of herself she refuses. She says that if his feelings are real, her appearance will not matter. When Blandford comes back, they have an agreement to meet at Grand Central Station at six o’clock. He is supposed to recognize her by the red rose she will wear. At one minute to six, a beautiful young woman approaches him, but she is not wearing a red rose. Lieutenant Blandford starts toward her but hesitates. Behind her is an older woman, well past forty, who is wearing a red rose. When he holds out the book and asks her to dinner, she quickly explains that the young woman who just passed by asked her to wear the red rose. She tells him that he has apparently passed some sort of test and that the young woman—the real Hollis Meynell—is waiting for him in the restaurant across the street.

1. What details are given that indicate Lieutenant Blandford and Hollis Meynell might be in love, even before they meet?

Lieutenant Blandford’s great anticipation shown through his beating heart and his counting of the minutes till they meet shows the great value he places in her. Hollis Meynell is said to have filled a special place in Lieutenant Blandford’s life for the thirteen months of their steady correspondence. Her words encouraged and strengthened him in troubled times. Hollis’s explanation of why she would not send a photograph also indicates that they might be in love.

2. Explain the basis of their relationship. How solid was it?
Their relationship was based on the internal character and personality revealed in the thoughts and feelings they shared through their letters. Their relationship was solid because it was based on character, rather than on physical appearance.

3. Why did Hollis Meynell refuse to send her picture? Why did she ask the older woman to wear her flower?
Hollis Meynell refused to send her picture because she did not want Lieutenant Blandford to love her solely for her looks. She asked the older woman to wear her flower in order to test the genuineness of Lieutenant Blandford’s affection.

4. Do you think that people can really fall in love before they meet? Defend your answer.
