Vacation Homework Assignments

9th Grade (now 10th grade)- For your vacation homework, I want you to write a 4-5 page double spaced story that has one of the themes that we discussed last year. This means that you can write a story with the theme of courage, humility, temperance, love, joy, peace, nobility, or beauty. You can either make a story that is completely your own, or you can write a sequel to one of the stories that we already read. We will be reading these stories out loud in the first week of class, so make sure you have them finished on time! If you have any questions, email me!

10th Grade (now 11th grade)- For your vacation homework, I want you to write a 4-5 page double spaced story that contains one of the themes that was in either Oedipus Rex or Antigone. To remind you: the dominant themes within these plays were pride, truth, following God's laws or man's laws, tyranny, the position of women in society, fate, etc. These stories will be due the first week of class. If you have any questions, email me!

Miss Jones! I have a question about our vacation homework. Fate is also one of the themes. Is fate mean the destiny that god gave them? Like oracle. Is fate can be the forbidden love between man and woman?

Hi Hannah,
In this case, fate means the destiny that the gods have given... and it's not just a small destiny, like "You will marry this person", but instead, the entire destiny of their life-- how they will be born, how they will die, etc. I hope this helps you!

JOHN!
Are you coming back? You don't have to do the Word of the Day but it's good for self-study and increasing your vocabulary on your own.
Hope to see you soon,
Miss Jones

Hi Se Hyun--
It's best to choose just one theme. However, some themes are connected to one another, such as the theme of pride and the theme of tyranny. Good luck with your work!

Hi Miss Jones, this is Tae Hwan. do you having good vacation? I want to ask you something. First one is that if I choose two themes, is that point off??? the other question is that can I write Oedipus and Antigone both of them? In one assignment? For example, Oedipus's themes are ~~~, and also in Antigone's case, themes are ~~~ like that.

Hi Tae Hwan--
First of all, remember that this is a STORY not an essay, so it's best to SHOW a theme and not just say what the theme is. I think it is best to choose just one theme for your story so that you can make sure that it is clearly present within your story. However, as I told Se Hyun, there are some themes that are connected and are therefore okay to include within the story, such as pride and tyranny. Oedipus and Antigone have SOME overlapping themes, but not all of them do-- I think it's best for you to just choose one story's theme to work with and not spread yourself out too thinly.
