Comprehension Question Answers 1-9 for Oedipus the King

In the comments section of this post, I have put the answers for comprehension questions 1-9 of Oedipus the King pages 159-171. Write these down in your notes tonight.

In addition to writing these answers down, you must also finish the comprehension questions 10-18 for Oedipus the King pages 159-171. They were posted previously.

1. What is the setting of the story?

The story begins in Thebes, many years after Oedipus came to Thebes and rescued it from the Sphinx. He is now the king of Thebes and Thebes is suffering from a plague. (p.159- introduction)
2. Who is Oedipus?
Oedipus is the person who solved the riddle of the Sphinx and saved Thebes from its rule of terror. He is the king. (159)
3. What does Oedipus say to his people to encourage them to speak to him?
First of all, Oedipus calls his people “my children” (p. 159, l. 6) and then he says “You can trust me. I am ready to help, I will do anything” which encourages them to speak up. (159.13-14)

4. What is the current disaster that Thebes is facing?

Thebes is in the midst of a plague that is killing many of its citizens. (160.27-37)

5. How had Oedipus rescued the city of Thebes in the past? How does this make Oedipus’s people feel about him?
He had rescued the city of Thebes from the Sphinx, a monster with a lion’s body, a woman’s chest, and wings. Oedipus was able to solve the Sphinx’s riddle and freed Thebes. The people of Thebes trust Oedipus and consider him to be the best man of all for helping them when it comes to their day-to-day struggles as well as their problems sent by the gods or other supernatural forces. They believe that Oedipus is blessed by the gods. (161.41-49)

7. What do Oedipus’s people beg him to do?
They beg him to rescue them from the plague. They want him to tell them what he knows in case he has had any special message from the gods concerning the source of the plague. (161.52-56)

8. What has Oedipus done to help find a solution to the plague?
He has sent Creon to consult the Oracle of Delphi about how they could save the city. (162.81-82) The Oracle of Delphi was a temple of Apollo that held priestesses who were believed to have the power to prophesy, so many people would consult them about the future.

9. Who is Creon?
He is Oedipus’s brother-in-law—the brother of Oedipus’s wife and queen of Thebes (her name is Jocasta) (162.82)
