8. Why do Sir Myles and the Black Knight begin to fight?
They begin to fight because Miles hit the shield, and the Black Knight says that because Miles was bold enough to hit the shield, he will take his shield away from him and hang the shield on the tree with the other shields. 9. After the Black Knight wounds Sir Myles, what does the Black Knight do?

10. When King Arthur hears how Sir Myles was injured and abandoned by the Black Knight, how does he react? Why does he feel this way?

Arthur is absolutely shocked and enraged because he thinks it’s a bad reflection on his Kingdom and on his ability as a king if somebody can so clearly go without following the rules. 20. Why has Merlin come to be with Arthur?
Merlin has come because he knows that Arthur is in great danger and that Arthur will not have anyone to rescue him from his trouble. Merlin wants Arthur to take him with him as he goes on his adventure. (64)

21. Describe what the shields on the apple tree look like. Who do all these shields belong to?
All of the shields have different devices on them, which means that they each belonged to a different knight. Some of the shields were clean and in good condition, while others were stained with blood or marred with cuts as if they’d been used in a violent battle. These shields belonged to knights that had been defeated by the Black Knight and they belong to the Black Knight now. (67)

22. When Arthur sees all these shields, what does he think?

23. What two things motivate Arthur to challenge the Black Knight to a fight?
Arthur wants to challenge the Black Knight because he knows that if he defeats the Black Knight, he will gain a lot of honor in defeating such a powerful knight and he also wants to fight him to avenge Griflet and to punish the Black Knight for breaking the code of chivalry. (59, 67)

25. Describe the fight between King Arthur and the Black Knight. Are they evenly matched?
When Arthur and the Black Knight fight, it is like two forces of nature clashing—when they hit each other, it sounded like a great thunder and lightning storm. Arthur wants them to fight on foot with their swords. The Black Knight does not agree to this proposal and has his servants bring out new fresh spears made of ash. (70)

28. What is the outcome of the fight? Who is knocked off his horse first? What happens after that?
When they clash again, their spears break again and then the Black Knight has even more spears brought out for them to use. However, on the third time, only Arthur’s spear is broken while the Black Knight’s spear stays in tact. The Black Knight’s spear pierces through Arthur’s shield and the girths holding Arthur’s saddle on his horse burst, so Arthur is knocked off his horse first. Thankfully, Arthur was able to stay on his feet even though he was knocked off his horse. Because he was hit so hard, Arthur was a little stunned and also very angry. He rushed the Black Knight and grabbed the reins of the Black Knight’s horse. He challenged him to fight against him on foot with a sword, but the Black Knight refused, saying that the battle was over and that he had defeated Arthur—he told him that he must give him his shield. This really angered Arthur, so he made the Black Knight’s horse rear up and so the Black Knight was thrown off his horse. They then drew their swords and started to fight with their swords. (71)

33. After the fight with Pellinore, where does Merlin take Arthur? Why does he take him there?
Merlin takes him into the forest to a hermitage. He takes him there because the hermit who lives there is known for his holiness and for his great ability to heal those who are wounded and sick—he is known for being a skillful leech, which means that he is a skilled medieval doctor. (75)

34. While Arthur is recovering at the hermitage, who also comes there?
While Arthur is recovering, Lady Guinevere of Cameliard comes with her court. She has come because one of her favorite servants was sick with a fever and she was hoping the hermit would be able to cure him. (76)

35. How does she help heal Arthur?
She gives the hermit a box of precious balsam, and the hermit treats Arthur’s wounds with this salve so that he can heal more quickly. (77)

36. When Arthur sees Lady Guinevere, what does he think about her? What does Guinevere think about Arthur?
When Arthur sees her, he is stunned by her beauty and can’t decide whether she is just a human or an angel that is sent to take care of him. When Guinevere sees him, she realizes that she has never seen any knight who is so noble looking, and she also feels a lot of pity for him since he’s so seriously wounded. (77)

37. After Arthur meets Guinevere, what does he want to change in his life?
