1. What motivated Mafatu to kill the shark? How did he feel after it was over? Why?
Mafatu’s dog Uri had fallen into the water, and Mafatu wanted to save his little friend from the hammerhead. The boy felt humble with gratitude because he couldn’t believe that he had actually been able to accomplish something so amazing and so dangerous. He also felt humbled because throughout his life, he had always been ruled by his fear of the water, but at this moment, he had been able to conquer his fear of the water and his fear of the shark in order to save his best friend.
2. What project did he have to complete before he could head home? How did he feel once he had finished it?
He needed to finish constructing his canoe. Once he had finished it, he felt proud of his work and had a great sense of accomplishment.
3. Why did Mafatu plunge into the water where the octopus lurked? How did he kill this “most dreaded monster of the deep?”
He wanted to get his knife which had fallen into the water. If Mafatu had left his knife behind, he would have been leaving behind something that was very valuable and helpful for his day to day survival. He killed the octopus by stabbing out its eyes.
4. How did Uri help Mafatu throughout the story?
Uri gave Mafatu companionship, encouragement, and the courage to face the shark. On a more practical level, Uri helped Mafatu carry heavy loads, such as a bundle of whale bones and the body of the wild pig that Mafatu had killed.
