16. When Ellis Duckworth and his men disappear, what does John want to do? What does Dick want to do?
John wants to continue going to Holywood, but Dick wants to run to Sir Daniel’s men and warn them that they are about to be attacked. (47, 48)

18. Why does John feel angry that Dick wants to help Sir Daniel and Daniel’s men?
John is angry because he can’t understand how Dick can be loyal to a man who killed his father and who also is so clearly corrupt. (48)

19. Why does Dick feel loyal to Sir Daniel and what does he say he’ll do if he discovers that Daniel killed his father? Why does he think his father would consider it honorable?
Dick feels loyal to Sir Daniel because Sir Daniel was the one who raised him. He feels loyal to Daniel’s men because he had played with them and gone hunting with them in the past. He says that if he finds out that Sir Daniel killed his father, then there will be a time that he will have to kill Sir Daniel—but it won’t be until that time. Dick thinks that his father would consider this honorable because he would want Dick to stay loyal until he knew for sure that Daniel was guilty. (48)

20. What does Dick want John to release him from? Will John do this?
Dick wants John to release him from the promise that he made to take John all the way to Holywood. John refuses to do this and says that he will tell everyone that Dick broke his promise (49)

21. After Dick fights John and takes the crossbow and tries to run, what does John do?
John runs after him and tries to follow him. (49)

22. How does Dick try to keep John from following him? Does this work?
Dick tries to threaten him and says he will shoot him, but it doesn’t work—John stubbornly insists that he will go with Dick. (49,50)

23. Describe what happens when Dick and John see Selden and the rest of Sir Daniel’s men. Who attacks them? Are there any survivors?
Dick and John find Selden and Sir Daniel’s men—and they see the men ambushed by the men of the Black Arrow. The men of the Black Arrow are hiding in the trees, and Selden’s men are quickly slaughtered. There are no survivors—are all killed very quickly by arrows. (52)

24. Describe how Selden dies. Who tries to save him?
Selden is the last of the men to be shot. The men of the Black Arrow torture him a little by taking a long time to shoot him. He tries to run and Dick stands to help him, but Selden is finally shot by the men. (53,54)

25. Why don’t the men of the Black Arrow shoot Dick?
Because Ellis Duckworth recognizes Dick and knows that he is the son of Harry Shelton. He shouts out to his men not to shoot Dick and they obey him. (54)

26. When Dick and John continue to run, who do they meet in the forest and what happens to this man? Describe how this man “fights” with Dick.
When Dick and John continue to run, they are intercepted by a man who is probably another of the men of the Black Arrow. He is wearing green and is armed with a bow and arrow. This man shouts at Dick and John to stop, but Dick doesn’t stop and runs quickly to the man. He then stabs the man with his dagger and kills him. Dick is able to kill this man because the man doesn’t really fight against Dick with his full strength. (56)
