Write each answer thoroughly, thoughtfully and in a complete sentence. You must also provide a page reference for each answer you give.

1. What is the one thing that Sir Daniel never rests from?
The one thing that Sir Daniel never rests from is finding ways to get money from his people. (19)
2. Describe the ways that Sir Daniel gets his money. Who helps him in these endeavors?
One of the main ways that he gets money is through finding a way to get at disputed inheritances—which means that when there is a debate over a dead person’s estate, Sir Daniel can get Sir Oliver to forge the right documents to “prove” that the money is his. He also used his connections with powerful people to get money that didn’t belong to him and often would take over towns with brute force and then use Sir Oliver’s powers as a lawyer to keep the land under his control. (19)
3. How had Sir Daniel gotten Kettley?
Sir Daniel got Kettley through the use of brute force (he used his soldiers to invade and take over the town). He was there with his soldiers to keep the people of Kettley from rebelling against him. (19)
4. Why had Sir Daniel commanded his men to report at Kettley? Were his men being called to fight for a just cause?
Daniel had commanded the men to report at Kettley because many people were discontent/unhappy there, and he needed the men to control these unhappy people. Because Kettley was not rightfully his, his men were not being called to fight for a just cause. (19)
5. On pages 20-21, Sir Daniel has a common man report to him and accuses him of many crimes. What are some clues that his accusations are unjust?
The first clue that his accusations are unjust is the fact that he heard of a bad man named Tyndal of Shoreby, but the man with him is actually named Condall of Shoreby. The second clue is that Daniel is willing to free the man if the man only pays him 20 pounds—it’s clear that justice is not really the goal, but instead, gaining money is the goal. He also threatens to hang Condall when Condall says he cannot pay. (20,21)
6. How does Sir Daniel want Condall to pay for his crimes? Can Condall do this?
Daniel wants Condall to pay 20 pounds, which is about 17 times more than what Condall owns. Condall is not capable of paying this. (21)
7. When Condall says he is unable to do what Sir Daniel asks, how does Sir Daniel threaten him? How does Condall respond to this?
Sir Daniel threatens him by saying he will hang him on a tree. Condall does not want to die, so he says he will do whatever Daniel asks him to do. (21)
8. After Condall agrees to pay, what other unjust thing does Sir Daniel demand?
Sir Daniel then changes the amount that Condall owes, and tells him that he must pay 40 pounds instead of just 20 pounds. (21)
9. Describe the young boy that is with Sir Daniel. What is his name?
The young boy that is with Sir Daniel is named John. It is difficult to tell what age he is—his face looks old, but it is also smooth and without any whiskers. He is unusually slim and walks awkwardly. (22)
10. What does Sir Daniel tell John he will do for him? What is unusual about John?
Sir Daniel tells John that he will make him a marriage of a thousand pounds and that he will soon be Lady Shelton. John is unusual because he is actually a GIRL IN DISGUISE. (22)
11. Who comes to Kettley bringing news for Sir Daniel? What news does he bring?

12. How does Sir Daniel respond to the advice that he and his men should go quickly to Risingham?
Daniel says that they shouldn’t hurry to help Risingham… instead, they should hurry to sit down and eat dinner together. Daniel argues that doing things too quickly is what can bring death to man, and he says that delaying is best. (23)
13. Describe the opinions of the men concerning Daniel when he is in war and when he is out of war?
Out of war, Daniel is disliked. His neighbors do not like him because he is greedy and he is a tyrant. However, in war, he is popular and liked by the men who follow him because he is brave and he takes good care of the soldiers that fight for him. (23)
14. According to Sir Daniel, where was Dick’s father shot and why was the case never really settled?
According to Sir Daniel, Dick’s father was shot somewhere between the Moat-house and Holywood. He said that a man named Duckworth was thought to have committed the crime, but the case wasn’t settled because it was a time of war and there wasn’t any set justice system. (24)
15. When Daniel tells Dick he wants him to ride back to Tunstall with a message, how does Dick react? Why?
Dick was not happy about the idea of returning back to Tunstall because he wants to stay in the battle. He wants Sir Daniel to send someone else back with the message so that he can fight. (24-25)

22. Why wasn’t John/Joanna able to kill the horse himself/herself?
Because John/Joanna didn’t have any weapons and he/she didn’t have the ability to use them well enough to kill the horse. (p.29)
23. How does Dick decide to help John/Joanna get to Holywood?

30. What does John say to Dick about the fact that he doesn’t like women? How does Dick respond to this? Will John do what Dick wants?
John says that Dick is not a natural man if he doesn’t like women since God made men and women to be together. Dick gets really angry when John accuses him of not being a natural man, and he wants to prove to him that he’s a “true man” so he wants John to have a fist fight with him. John doesn’t want to fight him and begs for peace. (31)
