7. Describe what happened the day Thomas Baker’s letter was read in class. Explain why both Miss Dove and the children found the experience to be moving.
Randy read a letter that spoke about how what Miss Dove taught was actually the thing that helped him survive in his most difficult times. The children and Miss Dove were both touched because it was the first time that Miss Dove was revealed to be truly helpful (and not just mean). The children were able to see through her cold façade and see that her actions were of love and that they were being prepared to survive under the extreme circumstances of life. Miss Dove was also touched because she could finally see that she was effectively teaching what she had tried to teach to her students.
