1. How was the children’s behavior different in Miss Dove’s class than in all the other classes?
The children were very quiet and well behaved in Miss Dove’s class, because she expected them to be serious and disciplined. But in other classes they were wilder and more light-hearted.
2. What strange feeling did Miss Dove sometimes get when she was by herself?
When Miss Dove was by herself, she often got the feeling that something or somebody was with her and watching her—and later she realized that she felt like she was being watched by the ghosts of her old students who had grown up, left the town, or those who had died.
3. What qualities did Miss Dove have that made her an excellent teacher?
She was very strict, had strong control over her class, she was mentally tough and also she was a very intimidating person. She also knew her subject really well. She had discipline and taught that to her students. However, the most important thing that she did was teach her students lessons that could be applied to their life outside of school. She found a way to relate geography to greater topics, like morality and self-discipline. She knew how to love her students in her actions and not just with words.
4. List several of Miss Dove’s specific classroom regulations.
Work needed to be done on time.
No whispering.
No hair chewing.
If you coughed, you had to cover your mouth.
Students needed to sit still in her class.
If a student needed to have a drink of water, she would make everybody sit still and wait silently for that person to return, so her students learned that it was easier to wait to drink water only after her class was finished.
5. Describe Miss Dove’s basic philosophy of life and teaching.
Miss Dove believed that “Life required hardihood” and this was what she expected of herself, other teachers, and her students. For this reason, self control was very important, as was obedience. She also found a way to teach morality as well as teaching her subject, such as “The yak is a very helpful animal.” Which meant that she wanted her students to be helpful.
6. Why was Thomas Baker a hero? What part had Miss Dove played in making Thomas a hero?
During the war, Thomas Baker’s ship had been hit and his commanding officers killed, so Thomas Baker took the position of leadership and led many of his comrades to safety. He was able to fight his fear because Miss Dove had trained him to be self- controlled. He survived on a raft for days without any food and only with a minimal amount of water. Miss Dove had played a part in his survival because she had taught him to be very mentally strong and to be able to survive for a long time without water.
7. Describe what happened the day Thomas Baker’s letter was read in class. Explain why both Miss Dove and the children found the experience to be moving.
Randy read a letter that spoke about how what Miss Dove taught was actually the thing that helped him survive in his most difficult times. The children and Miss Dove were both touched because it was the first time that Miss Dove was revealed to be truly helpful (and not just mean). The children were able to see through her cold façade and see that her actions were of love and that they were being prepared to survive under the extreme circumstances of life. Miss Dove was also touched because she could finally see that she was effectively teaching what she had tried to teach to her students.
