10A Weekend Homework

The Garden Party Presentation Assignment

A work's theme is the central idea which gives that work its meaning. In a story, it is the controlling insight into life that the author wishes to impart.

Some of the main themes within The Garden Party are the themes of

  • Childhood vs. Adulthood/Innocence vs. Experience (you need to connect this to gender roles)
  • Conformity and Resistance (this group should take a look at the passage about the karakas trees)
  • Social Class/Class Conflict (this group should look at the descriptions of the Sheridan's home and the Scott's cottage and where they are in relation to one another)

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Each powerpoint presentation must be 15 minutes long. Each person in your group must speak for 3 minutes. Be prepared to answer any questions I might have for you about your assigned theme. Bring your presentations to class on a USB flash drive and give it to me in the morning so that I can have it ready at the beginning of class.

2. You must provide several page references and specific quotes that contain your theme and then
explain how these passages relate to your theme.

3. You must explain what Kathryn Mansfield was saying about these specific themes and explain what The Garden Party teaches you through these themes.

I am not going to list your groups on the website for the sake of your privacy and security. You should know who is in your group since I spoke to you about this project in class.

DUE DATE: WEDNESDAY, 3/11
You will not be recieving any in-class time to prepare.
