24. Does Agamemnon take Chryseis back to her father? Who takes her instead?
No, he doesn’t. Odysseus takes her instead. (67.311)
25. Who are Eurybates and Talthybios and what does Agamemnon have them do? Do they want to do this?
Eurybates and Talthybios are two of the men who serve under Agamemnon. Agamemnon sends these two men to Achilleus’s camp to take Briseis. These men “went against their will.” (67.319-327)
26. Even though Achilleus does not want to give Briseis away, how does he treat the men who come to get her?
Although Achilleus was not happy to see these two men since they were there to take away Briseis, he was polite to them and told them that it was not their fault and that he knew it was really Agamemnon who was behind their actions. He is hospitable to them and respectful. (68.334-344)

27. What oath does Achilleus make in front of these men?
He promises, once again, that even when the Greeks need him, he will not come to help them because Agamemnon is not wise enough to realize the sacrifice that he is making in taking away Briseis. (68, 338-344)

28. Does Briseis want to leave Achilleus?
No, she doesn’t. She went unwillingly. (68, 344-348)
29. Who does Achilleus pray to after Briseis is taken away from him?
Achilleus prays to his mother Thetis, a minor goddess. (68.351)
30. What does Achilleus want his mother to do for him?
He wants Thetis to speak to Zeus in Olympos and he wants Zeus to help the Trojans so that many Greeks will die and Agamemnon will realize that what he did was wrong and that he dishonored Achilleus. (69, 70. 407-412)
31. How had Thetis, Achilleus’s mother, helped Zeus in the past?
There was a rebellion against Zeus in Olympos—Hera, Poseidon, and Athena tried to bind Zeus and he was going to lose his position of power in Olympos—but then Thetis freed Briareus, a powerful monster with a hundred hands—and Briareus was strong enough to free Zeus. Because of Thetis, Zeus is still in power in Olympos. (69,70. 396-406)
32. Why can't Thetis go to visit Zeus immediately? What advice does she give to her son?
Thetis can’t visit Zeus because Zeus and the other gods went to Aithiopia to have a feast and he won’t be back for twelve days. She tells him not to fight and to still stay angry with the Greeks. (70.421-426)

33. What are three things that the Greeks do in Chryse to regain Apollo's favor?
First of all, they return Chryseis to her father Chryses. Then, they offer a sacrifice to Apollo. The sacrifice consists of slaughtered bulls, wine, and grain. Lastly, they sing sacred hymns and pray to Apollo. (71.446-472)

34. When the Achaians sail back to their camp after returning Chryseis to Chryses, what is a sign that Apollo is no longer angry with them?
Apollo sends them a strong and favorable wind that can propel them quickly across the water. (72.479)

35. Where does Thetis go on the twelfth day after Achilleus withdrew from the fighting?
Thetis goes to Olympos to speak with Zeus. (72.497)

36. What does Thetis ask Zeus to do for Achilleus?
Thetis asks Zeus to restore Achilleus’s honor since he was dishonored by Agamemnon when Agamemnon took Briseis away and then she asks him to make the Trojans strong until the Greeks give Achilleus what he deserves and honor him in the way that they should. (72.505-509)

37. How does Zeus reply to Thetis's request? Will he do it? Will it be easy for him to do this?
Zeus says that he will do what she asks, but that it won’t be easy for him because he knows it will put him into conflict with Hera. Hera really hates the Trojans so if he gives the Trojans strength, she will be furious. (73.518-521)

38. When Zeus returns to the feast of the gods in Olympos, why does he fight with Hera?
Zeus fights with Hera because she had seen him speaking with Thetis, and she hated that she was making secret plans with Thetis. She knows that he is planning to help the Trojans and this angers. (73, 74.536-559)

39. After Zeus and Hera fight, who speaks to Hera and what advice does he give her?
Hephaistos speaks to Hera and tells her to be careful in the way that she speaks with Zeus and to be patient with him because once Zeus is angry, he has the power to do very powerful things to them all. He asks her to make peace with Zeus so that there can be peace in Olympos for everyone—he says that if Zeus wanted to, he could throw all of the gods out of Olympos. (74.573-589)

40. What had Zeus once done to Hephaistos a long time ago when Hephaistos had tried to help Hera?
Zeus got angry with Hephaistos when he tried to help Hera so he picked him up by the feet and threw him off of Olympos. It is because of this great fall that Hephaistos is lame/crippled. (74.75, 590-593)

41. How are the gods cheered up after the fight between Zeus and Hera?
Hephaistos serves them ambrosia/nectar and they feast and drink. They watch him as he bustles about the hall taking care of everyone and that amuses him. Then, they listen to Apollo play the lyre and the Muses sing. (75.595-604)
